Restore Chatgpt 404 Operation with GA4

Chatgpt often refers to resources when answering the challenge. Operation from these clicks is usually highly converting in my testing. Unfortunately, Chatgpt often hallucinates URL addresses and sends visitors to non -sexist sites.

A study published this month by Ahrefs has found Chatgpt 5 links to error pages almost three times more than Google search.

For most websites, transmission from ChatgPT is still less than 5%. However, it is still good to watch the cottage 404 errors and accusations. With the rejection of Google searching, “storage” is visited.

Solve the problem in three steps:

  1. The 404 “Page Not Found” URL in Google Analytics 4.
  2. Create useful 404 pages for visitors from hallucinated URLs.
  3. Set 301 redirection only for broken URLs that generate traffic.

Watch in Google Analytics

Filter Google Analytics messages to URL with CHATGPT operations:

  • Go to “Connection”> “Pages and Projects” and check all pages with operation for a specified period.
  • Above the list of pages, select “Page and Class Names”.
  • Click “Add Filter” above the chart.
  • Select the “Source/Medium” session as a dimension.
  • Select “contains” and enter “Chatgpt”.
  • Click “Apply”.

Now your list is filtered for sites with Chatgpt.

Furthermore, narrowing the list to error pages:

  • Go to your site and open all the pages with the chatgpt.
  • Note the name of the page with 404 errors (Ctrl+D on Windows; command+d on Mac). In my case, the name “The Receipt error page 404” was.

Then return to Google Analytics:

  • In the search panel, enter the name of the Error Page above the List of Pages with operation from the Chatgpt. Add the “Path and Screen Path and Screen” class as a secondary dimension.
  • Determine the URL of this message and check from time to time.
